Trudy trotted behind the tattooed woman to her car—a rusted Volkswagen bus—and climbed into the back seat because the passenger seat next to the driver was missing. Completely gone. The interior of the car was as bad as the exterior. Not only messy, with seat cushions so torn in places that you could see the wire springs underneath, but it had an odd smell, a combination of rotten fish and old socks. The Volkswagen bus shuddered and coughed before roaring to life. It lurched forward . . . and suddenly they were zooming through the streets of Stoney Ridge and out toward the countryside like two women on a mission, which they were.

Exciting! Trudy’s stomach, though, felt as if she were on a roller coaster. She wasn’t used to moving at such a fast speed. Buggies plodded. This woman drove like she talked—speeding fast, two-wheeled corners, abrupt stops, unrepeatable words shouted at slow-moving cars. The Volkswagen bus turned the final corner that led to Lost Creek Farm and nearly rammed right up against the back of a bulldozer as it moved slowly up the road. “Oh no,” Trudy said. “No, no, no! They’re already starting.”

The tattooed woman gunned the engine and passed the bulldozer. Trudy hung on to the tattered seat cushion for dear life. She yelled, “Shortcut!” and lifted a hand to point out the driveway to Lost Creek Farm, then quickly grasped the seat again as the woman made a sharp right turn.

At the top of the driveway, near the guesthouse, she slammed on the brakes and turned off the engine, which took a few shuddering gasps before it died. “Let’s make tracks before the machines of doom arrive.” She hopped out of the car and Trudy followed. “Where to?”

Oh, right. Of course! While the tattooed woman seemed to act as if she knew just about everything there was to know, she had no idea of Wonder Lake’s whereabouts. Trudy went ahead of her to start up the path to the trail, hoping it wasn’t too steep a climb for the woman. She needn’t have worried. They’d gone only halfway up when the woman overtook her and Trudy had to hurry to keep up. It wasn’t long before they stood on the resting rock overlooking the pond.

The woman huffed, casting a disapproving glance at Trudy. “Wonder Lake, indeed.”

True. Definitely true. From the disappointed look on her face, Trudy knew the pond didn’t seem like much to crow about. Certainly nothing to raise up the hackles of city hall. Suddenly nervous, Trudy started chattering. “We call it Wonder Lake because of the birds. All kinds have made it a nesting site.”

“Rarities?”

“I don’t think Micah’s ever spotted any rarities up here. I know I haven’t. But still, it’s a . . . wonder to us. We just love this place. Penny, Ben, Micah, Birdy, me. We come up here all the time.”

The woman ignored her. She was peering through her binoculars at the eagle aerie, silently watching the nest’s activities. The father eagle was absent, but the mother eagle was in the nest, her head tucked.
